THE FOURTH DIMENSION - MALMö TO COPENHAGEN, DENMARK - DAY 15
Because of my constant schedule of getting up way earlier than everyone else, I woke up at 7AM on the dot, and couldn’t sleep any longer. Moa has already left for work, and Leo was knocked out. I do my routine of showering, clothes and makeup, but I want to respect and thank Moa and Leo. I undo my air mattress, fold it up along with all of the sheets, make coffee for me and Leo, (although it gets cold by the time he wakes up), empty the dishwasher and reload the dishwasher with everything still in the sink. I make breakfast and let Leo sleep in for another 3 hours. I didn’t mind- He works hard, this was his only day off along with yesterday and he's spending it accommodating me, and we only had plans for us to get soup at his parents’ place for lunch before I left for Copenhagen.
Leo finally emerges, makes new coffee, and we hit the road. We walk to his parents’ soup restaurant, and pick up beet soup for me, and korv (sausage) soup for him. The person opening that day is also Emily, and she gives us our food to go. I try to pay again, but Leo insists I don’t. We leave and have to be mindful of bikers at all times- It’s exactly like Amsterdam, but the city is a fraction of the size.
Leo and I talk the whole way. Mostly we talk about gaming, his friends, and that he’ll probably game today after I depart- He’s accepted that Winter is coming in Sweden Haha!
On our way to the train station, I ask if I can buy Moa some bullar. I tried to ask what she wanted last night, but because she’s so nice, she of course didn’t want a thing. I pick up 5 bullar, three kardamumma and two regular for her to come home to. Leo said that’s perfect. I’m glad I could do something. I know I came at a busy time for them, and didn’t want to invade their space or take up too much of their time. I was prepared to be in and out.
We get to the train station, and buy my ticket. I have some time, and so we sit outside and chat some more. After about 10 minutes, it’s finally time for me to go. We say how good it was to see each other, and hope to see each other again soon, but not with 10 years in between. California, France or Sweden are all good meeting places- Hopefully Isa and Alex can join us next time.
We hug it out and I catch my train. It’s really quick- only about 25 minutes across the bridge. I get giddy going to another country for the first time in this trip. I come into central station, and right across the street is an amusement park called TRIVOLI. It’s exactly like Gröna Lund in Stockholm.
I navigate to my hostel, and check in. We have lockers in our room this time, so that’s great, and reception is 24hrs. I pick three books to read, “War and Peace pt. 1”, “The Tribes Of Palos Verdes”, (they just turned this into a movie with Jennifer Garner), and the third is a book in Swedish, “Kaffe Med Rån”. I lock up my pack, take my small bag and hit the city. I pull cash from an ATM, and walk a few miles up to the main harbor. I get my pictures and run because there are SO. MANY. TOURISTS. I cross the bridge to explore, and delighted, I find a free art installation. I LOVE this, and spend over 20 minutes inside of this metallic igloo. Some might argue this is just a selfie factory, but it felt like I was living and standing in the fourth dimension. I couldn’t get enough.
I know I have more to see, so I back track. On my walk, it is HOT. I regret not changing my pants to the linen ones, but I pop into a quickee mart, and grab my favorite Magnum classic ice cream. This gives me the perfect boost.
I pass under the Architecture design house. I keep looking around because the architecture here is INCREDIBLE. I know that Denmark is well known for it, but the buildings are like truly none I’ve ever seen before. Everything is intuitive, creative, fresh, and Scandinavian minimalist. Somehow these buildings manage to flow seamlessly with the old. It’s such a visual treat.
I come back to where I started, right by the train station and amusement park. Here, I find the thinking statue. I snap photos, and rest at the park- I’ve been walking A LOT at this point. The garden is lovely- and the building is interesting...It has flames all along the side of it.
Trying to tackle two more things on my list today, I head for Jen Olsen’s clock in the main square. It’s actually just around the corner from my hostel, and across the street where I pulled money. I ask the guards if I can enter, but it closed at 4pm. I missed it by 15 minutes. Ugh- had I known earlier, it could’ve been one of the first things I knocked off.
I still think I can make it to this gallery. I have 45mins to get there. But I find, as I’m walking and walking, it’s farther than I thought, and I’m not getting very far very quickly. I decide to call it a day, and get back to rest. The hostel serves dinner and breakfast for very cheap, but after the ice cream, my stomach is a bit goofy. And I don’t fancy spending more money on breakfast, so I pick up two bananas, and two breads for breakfast tomorrow morning and the day after for less than $3.
For dinner, I just want a carbie staple, so I’m having the rest of my chips from Norway. It’s only 6pm, but I think I’m going to go to bed at around 8pm. I plan to get to Jen Olsen’s clock right when they open at 9am tomorrow, do a three hour walking tour at 10:45am, buy the concept shoes I found, then do a gallery, and if I have time, check out Christian Stad.
We’ll see how much I accomplish tomorrow. (The third day I plan to do two more galleries, but one is further away in Aarhus).
I wasn’t expecting it to be this busy in Copenhagen. Everyone just talks about the restaurants and shops, and that there’s not much to do here, but honestly, my days are packed. I hope I actually have time for everything.
Love your pics from Göteborg Mom and Dad, and I love you all!
